Carl H. Schaper

Carl H. Schaper, 92 of Fort Atkinson, passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at Reena Senior Living.

Carl was born on April 7, 1933, in Sisseton, South Dakota. His parents were father, Herman Schaper and mother, Clara (Lauber) Jacobs. He graduated from Wonewoc High School (now Wonewoc-Center) in Wonewoc, Wisconsin, in May of 1951.

On July 16, 1954, Carl was united marriage to Delores L. Duckworth, the daughter of Irvin and Lillian Duckworth.

Carl served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, from May 13, 1953, to May 12, 1955. He received an honorable discharge.

Carl enjoyed sports while residing in Madison, WI. He played on several fast pitch softball teams for 31 years. During his work life, Carl was employed at Sub Zero Freezer Co. of Madison from August 1955 through March 1959 and at Carnes Company of Verona from March 1959 until his retirement in January 1998. At Carnes Co. he started as a shop employee. After 1962, he had served in a number of managerial capacities until his retirement in 1998. In his retirement, Carl also worked part-time for Kutz Livery and Nitardy Funeral Home.

During the time from 1955, Carl and his wife Delores resided in Madison until Delores retired in 2001. During this time, they were members of Eastside Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 2001, they moved to Fort Atkinson to be closer to their only daughter Gail and her family and to be better able to enjoy their 2 grandchildren. Since living in Fort Atkinson, Carl and his wife joined Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church. He served 6 years on the Bethany Church Council.

Carl is survived by: his wife of 71 years Delores “Dee”; daughter Gail (Jeffrey) Westphal; grandson Aaron (Kelley) Westphal; granddaughter Carly Westphal; great-grandchildren Penelope Westphal and Hudson Westphal; brother Bernhardt Schaper; and sister Caroline “Sue” McGeough. Carl is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Carl preceded in death by his father Herman Schaper, mother Clara Jacobs, and sister Doris Owen.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 Am on Monday, December 22, 2025, at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church of Fort Atkinson with Pastor Ethan Steinbrenner and Pastor Robert Read presiding. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lakeside Lutheran High School, or Crown of Life Christian Academy.
