Dr. David C. Grout

Dr. David Clark Grout, 74, of Fort Atkinson, WI died Monday, February 24 at Fairhaven Retirement Community in Whitewater, WI after an extended illness. He was preceded by his wife of 43 years, Linda, who died in 2008. He is survived by one daughter, Thea (Chris) Reeves, of Fort Atkinson, and a son, Adam Grout, of Madison. He is also survived by a grandson, Benny David Reeves, as well as a brother Jim, of Dunnellon, FL, a sister, Ellen Calderini of Ann Arbor, MI and a brother Phil, of Fitchburg, MD.

Dr. Grout was born in Dayton, OH on June 13, 1939, the son of the late Gerald and Elinor (Bratten) Grout. He graduated from Oakwood High School in 1957, and went on to attend Cornell University and Ohio Wesleyan University, graduating in 1962. He attended medical school at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, and then completed his residency training through Northwestern University in Chicago, IL.

Dr. Grout was a well-known physician and surgeon in the area, practicing in Fort Atkinson, Edgerton, Stoughton, and Elkhorn for 35 years. In addition, he was an active member of the community, having been appointed as the first physician to serve on the Fort Atkinson Memorial Hospital Board. He also served for several years on the board of the Jefferson County Humane Society.

Dr. Grout was a passionate outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, duck and pheasant hunting, as well as perennial flower gardening. He also was an avid morel mushroom hunter who enjoyed this activity with his son, Adam.

Dr. Grout was a lifelong world traveler. His love for adventure began at an early age when he joined a canoe expedition to the arctic lasting 72 days. He and his wife, Linda, travelled throughout their lives together, especially enjoying the cities of New Orleans, San Francisco, and Chicago.

Above all else, Dr. Grout loved spending time with his family, including the family dogs Cleo, Phoebe, Zelda, Chloe, and Scarlet and cats Gomer, Brutus, Maxwell, Anderson, Portia, Samantha, and Chuck.

David Grouts life is reflected in the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson who said . . . to leave the world a better place than we found it whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know one life breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded.

A memorial and celebration of life will be held at the family home at 317 E. Sherman Avenue in Fort Atkinson on Saturday, March 1 from 1-4pm.

A private family burial will be held at a later time.
