George C. Black, 83, of Fort Atkinson, died on Monday, July 14, 2025. Born on April 5, 1942, Easter Sunday to Lee and Josephine (Marshall) Black at Watertown Hospital.
George attended Fort Atkinson schools graduating in 1960. He graduated from Bradley University with a certificate in Horology in 1961. Following his apprenticeship he became a licensed master watchmaker in 1964.
While at Bradley he worked as an elevator operator. During his apprenticeship he was a cook at Schlosser's Pancake House. After he got his state license, he built clocks and timers for the Apollo Moonshot Program. He moved around the state learning and teaching jewelry and timepieces until opening his own store in Fort 1975. He also worked for his friend Jimmie at Jim's Janitorial "for the exercise" and as a tax preparer for H&R Block "for the fun of it".
George joined Billings Masonic Lodge #139 in 1964 and was Master of the Lodge in 1982. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He was also a member of Wisconsin Horological Society, American Watch and Clockmakers Institute and National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors #47.
He enjoyed playing cards and games with his family and friends, recently enjoying trivia at the Senior Center, taking leisurely strolls around town and traveling the country. "Why would I want to go to another country? I haven't seen all of this one yet."
George is survived by his children Wendy, Jodi and George II. Granddaughter Wylee. Sisters Janet (John) Willitz, Mary Scidmore, Sarah (Jack) Bussler. As well as many friends and family members. He was predeceased by his parents, the mother of his children Joanne (Burhans) Black and daughter Wanda.
A celebration of life will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a Masonic service beginning at 11 a.m. with a luncheon to follow on Monday, August 11, 2025, at Jefferson County Masonic Center, 617 Masonic Blvd., Jeferson, WI 53549.
Donations can be made to Jefferson County Lodge #9 or the Fort Atkinson Senior Center.
