Gordon F. Day passed away January 5, 2012 at the age of 93.
Gordon was born in Milwaukee, WI on January 27, 1919 to Gordon M. and Hildegarde (Schmitz) Day and lived most of his youth on Eagle Springs Lake in Waukesha County.
Gordon graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he met Mary Ann McCarthy. They married February 12, 1944 in Birmingham, MI. They lived in Milwaukee until moving to Fort Atkinson where he maintained an insurance office as a life insurance agent for Mutual of New York from 1950 to 2000.
Gordon continued the tradition of a long line of civic-minded ancestors. In 1965 he was recognized by the Lions Club with its Distinguished Community Service Award. He served on the Fort Atkinson City Council from 1966 through 1976 including council president. He became president of the Industrial Development Corporation in 1975 and held that position for 17 years. In 1980 Gordon received the Fort Atkinson Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award. Gordon was instrumental in persuading a number of companies to locate in Fort Atkinson which were major contributors to the city's economy. For his many years of service to the City of Fort Atkinson, the city council named its north-side Gordon F. Day Industrial Park in his honor in 1988. Gordon was also recognized by the city's Rotary Club as a Paul Harris Fellow. As an active alumnus of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI, Gordon was awarded Alumnus of the Year in 1996. During his three years as President of the Evergreen Cemetery Association, the cemetery underwent a complete reorganization to improve its financial and operating position. Gordon has been a longtime member of St Peter's Episcopal Church and has served on the vestry and as Senior Warden.
Gordon is survived by his second wife Geraldine Day of Fond du Lac whom he married on July 20, 1991; children, Gordon Jr. (Connie) Day of Fort Atkinson and Richard C. (Aimee) Day of Crystal Lake, IL; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Chris) Casey, Lindsey Day, and Beth (Tim) Lawrence; great grandchildren, Andrew and Gavin Casey and Timmy and Charlotte Lawrence; sister-in-law, Jane Leary of Naples, FL; step children, Marty (Kathy) Olsen of Florida and Neil (Debbie) Olsen of Fond du Lac; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Hildagarde; first wife Mary Ann Day on March 16, 1988 and his brothers, Thomas, John and William Day.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 11 at St. Peters Episcopal Church in Fort Atkinson with Fr. Andrew Hanyzewski and Fr. Charles Payson officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Dunlap Memorial Home in Fort Atkinson and from 10 a.m. on Friday at the church until time of service.
Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Fort Community Foundation, the Fort Memorial Hospital Foundation or to St. Peters Episcopal Church.
