Harlow O. Block, 76, of Busseyville, died Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Janesville, of complications due to Parkinsons disease.
He was born on February 21, 1934 in Farmington, the son of Harlow and Gilma (Mielke) Block. After losing his parents and a sister, Patricia, in the blizzard of 1947, Harlow and his brother Bob went to live with Otto and Anita Sievert of Fort Atkinson.
Harlow was a graduate of St. Pauls School and Fort Atkinson High School in 1953. He served in Korea from 1953 to 1955. Harlow married Judith A. Messmer on June 13, 1964 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church.
Harlow had been employed by Hoffman Lumber Company for many years and retired from the Department of Public Works in Fort Atkinson. He enjoyed reading about military history and had previously bowled on many area teams.
Survivors include his wife, Judy; son, Barry (Hope) with grandchildren Dylan and Rhiley; daughter, Holly (Lee Henning) of Fort Atkinson and son, Jamey of Busseyville. He is also survived by brothers, Bob (Shirley) of Hebron and Ted (Eunice Prisk) of Fort Atkinson; sisters, Donna Messmer of Busseyville and Teri (Dennis) Carnes of Elkhorn; brother-in-law, Vic (Barb) Munro of Fort Atkinson. Survivors from his extended family are Karen (Rev. John) Zickuhr of Menomonee Falls, Fred Sievert of Watertown, Kathy Sievert of Verona and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister; mother and father-in-law Merlin and Martha Messmer; a sister-in-law Betty Munro; brothers-in-law Richard and Robert Messmer; nephew Jerrod Block; and extended family members sisters Darlene Bartol, Dianne Brokmeier and nephew Harry Brockmeier.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 20, 2010 at St. Pauls Ev. Lutheran Church in Fort Atkinson with Pastors Paul A. Scharrer and Michael D. Duncan co-officiating. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the church and from 10 a.m. on Monday at the church until time of service. Burial will follow in Busseyville Cemetery with Military Honors.
