Leo Kern Obituary

Leo John Kern of Fort Atkinson, passed away on December 8, 2024, at the age of 86. He was born on July 3, 1938, and was the adopted son of the late John and Barbara (Hauf) Kern.

Leo's early years of service were exemplified by his commitment to the US Air Force from 1958 to 1962, where his duties took him to the landscapes of Arizona and Spain. His patriotism continued to resonate throughout his life as a proud member of the American Legion Post 166 and as a flag bearer for Military Funeral Honors. The unity of love and commitment was embraced on November 10, 1962, when he married Virginette Kas at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, a venue that would see him serve many masses as a devoted usher.

His professional journey as a maintenance mechanic spanned the Fort Atkinson School District, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Fort HealthCare, and Mercy Hospital. Loved by students and faculty alike, Leo's role as a crossing guard in retirement first at Rockwell Elementary School and later at Purdy Elementary School reflected his continual dedication to the welfare of his community.

Leo’s hands were rarely idle, with hobbies that ranged from fixing the “unrepairable” refrigerator or air conditioner to the thrill of NASCAR racing, attending events at various short tracks and enjoying the adrenaline-fueled scenes across the country. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he found joy in cheering for the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers, and in his later years, the Milwaukee Brewers. His love for Polka music and a good dance filled the air with joy.

Leo is survived by his wife Virginette Kern of Fort Atkinson, son, Steve (Margaret) Kern; daughter, Michelle LaTorella; granddaughter, Emily Kern; sister, Bernadette Mitchelle and stepsister, Caroline Ryback.
