Margery Green Obituary

Margery Louise Green, affectionately known as Marge to her friends and G and GG to her family, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2025, at the age of 94, in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Marge was born on April 13, 1931, in Viroqua, Wisconsin. She was the seventh child of Albert and Gunda (Bergh) Thompson. Marge's life was characterized by her loving nature, her kind heart, and her witty sense of humor.

Marge graduated from Viroqua High School in 1948. She married Donald Green on January 21, 1949, at the Lutheran Parsonage in West Prairie, WI. Together they were blessed with two children, Duane and Pamela. Marge began her professional journey at JCPenney Company, where she honed her skills as a bookkeeper for seven years. Her career path then led her to the Production Credit Association in July of 1962, where she served as a dedicated Branch Secretary. As the association merged with Farm Credit Association, Marge continued to be a valued team member until she opted for early retirement in December of 1989.

Retirement did not slow Marge down; instead, it brought her closer to her beloved family as she moved to Fort Atkinson. She continued to work part-time at the Jefferson Daily Union as an inserter until health issues in 2013 prompted her to step back and focus on her well-being and family.

Marge's involvement in her community was a testament to her commitment to service and fellowship. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Atkinson, where she found spiritual solace and camaraderie. Her dedication to veterans and their families was evident through her membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1897 Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Post Ladies Auxiliary of Fort Atkinson. Marge also held the distinction of being a Charter member of the Order of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary of Viroqua.

Family was the cornerstone of Marge's life, where she was a cherished matriarch. She is survived by a loving family that includes her two children, Duane (Jackie) Green, and Pam (Russ) Hartwig. She is survived by three of her grandchildren, Jon (Sarah) Bina, Liz (Nick) Bakken, and Suzanne (Connor) Agnew; step grandchildren Matthew (Jamie) Patterson and Ashley (Andy) Seitz; her great-grandchildren Brandon Prisk, Hannah (Josh Williams) Turnipseed, Bennett Turnipseed, Kory Bina, Cameron Bakken, and Mia Bakken; and step great-grandchildren Alton Patterson, Dylan Seitz, Camden Seitz, and Cooper Seitz. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Ann Thompson and Berneil Meyer and her ex-son-in-law Rich (Mary) Bina, as well as many extended family members. Marge was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Gunda, her husband Donald, all six of her siblings, five sibling-in-laws, and her granddaughter Michelle. Each family member carries forward a part of Marge's enduring legacy through their own lives and the stories they share.

Marge's life was filled with joy, compassion, and laughter. Those who knew her will remember her for the warmth of her smile, her infectious laugh, and the love that she so generously gave to everyone around her. Her memory will continue to be felt in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

We say goodbye with love and gratitude for a life well lived. Marge’s warmth, kindness, and laughter touched all who knew her, and her legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come. The family would like to thank Alden Estates of Jefferson for their kind and compassionate care throughout the last few years. In keeping with her wishes, a private family-only service and burial will be held at a later time.
