Maxine Meyer Obituary

Maxine Mallory Meyer, 87, formerly of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin died on January 16, 2012 at Fairhaven in Whitewater. Maxine was born September 9, 1924 in Hampton, Iowa, the daughter of Dewitt R. Mallory and Flossie Mallory. On June 1, 1947 she married the late Eugene C. Meyer in Hampton.
Maxine grew up on the familys Mallory Angus farm, a special place she enjoyed and visited throughout her life. Until recently, she enjoyed many times at the farm with her beloved family and friends.
In 1946, she graduated from Iowa State University where she met Gene, her husband of 57 years. At Iowa State she majored in Home Economics, was a drum majorette, and a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.
After college graduation, Maxine and Gene moved to Des Moines, Iowa where she worked as an interior designer for Younkers Department Store. In 1948, they moved to Fort Atkinson where she became a homemaker.
Maxine was an extremely devoted mother, wife and grandmother. Family was always her first priority.
Giving back to the community in which she lived was important to Maxine. She was a founding member of the Fort Atkinson branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), served as president from 1966-1968, was a member of the state AAUW Board of Directors and was a leader in the development of the Clubs scholarship program. In 1982, AAUW named a gift to the Mabel Mannix Mc Elligott Fellowship in honor of Maxine.
For many years Maxine was a leader at the Dwight Foster Public Library. From 1971-1989 she served on the library board of directors. Maxine served as acting president of the board from 1986-87, and led the organization as its president from 1987-89. A number of new programs were established during her time of public service to the library. Included among them are the local establishment of a Friends of the Library organization, as well as the Lets Talk About It book discussion series, and the Brown Bag Lunch Program.
In 1987, Maxine became a member of both the Mid-Wisconsin Federated Library System Board and the Wisconsin Library Trustees Board. In 1989, she was honored as Trustee of the Year by the Wisconsin Library Association.
Maxine also enjoyed her many years as a member of Tuesday Club, her bridge club , the Methodist Church Circle and serving as a Rockwell School reading volunteer, Brownie leader and Dairy Shrine museum volunteer.
Surviving are two sons, Bruce (Elsa) of Fort Atkinson, John (Vicki) of Brattleboro, Vt.; a daughter Mary Lynn (Jeff) Elver of Whitefish Bay, WI; and four grandchildren, David and Meredith Meyer, and Mallory and Rick Elver, and her sister Fran Wullbrandt of Hampton, Iowa and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene in 2005.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 21 at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Atkinson with the Rev. Russ Frees, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation will be Saturday, from 9:00 am until time of service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Fort Community Foundation for the AAUW Adopt-a-Student Scholarship Fund or the Dwight Foster Public Library.
