Melvin H. Mel Bitter, 80, of Fort Atkinson, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Alden Estates of Jefferson surrounded by his family.
Mel was born on May 1, 1933 in Colby, son of the late Ervin and Adeline (Weetz) Bitter. He married Carol Stowe on September 5, 1953 in Loyal, WI.
Mel joined the United States Army and served in the Korean War. He was Commander of the VFW Post 3709 in Watertown, District 2 VFW Commander from 1984 to 1985, he was on the State Color Guard, a State Inspector for the VFW and a lifetime member of the Edwin Frohmader VFW Post 1879 in Fort Atkinson. Mel was also a volunteer escort at Fort Memorial Hospital.
Mel worked as an electrical engineer at the space station in Cape Canaveral, FL. He enjoyed reading, woodworking and carpentry and collecting coins and pens.
Mel is survived by his wife Carol; children, Debra (Everette) Mann of Titusville, FL, Ervin (Sandy) Bitter of Roscoe, IL, Faye Bitter of Pembroke Pines, FL and Scot Bitter of Kenosha, WI; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his brother John Bitter.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Dunlap Memorial Home in Fort Atkinson with Pastor Bill Beyer officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the memorial home until time of service.
