Merrill J. Hachtel, 76 of Jefferson, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Alden Estates of Countryside.
Merrill was born on May 18, 1934, son of the late Alvin R. and Ruby (Merrill) Hachtel in Wales. He married Judy Pellman on June 21, 1958 at St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Rome.
Merrill graduated from Jefferson High School, and then enlisted in the Wisconsin National Guard from 1952 to 1955. He then joined the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1957. Following his time with the Navy he worked for General Motors in Janesville, mostly as a painter for 45 years. After retiring in August 2000, he worked at Super Wash for three years.
In the 1960s and 70s he was a licensed dynamiter, working with many of the local quarries. He was also one of the founders and president of Jefferson Snow Stormers Snowmobile Club in the early 1970s. Merrill also enjoyed the outdoors; gardening, sawing wood and hunting deer, elk and turkeys.
Merrill is survived by his wife Judy of Jefferson; children, Bob of Hebron and Becky (Rich) Krull of Lake Mills; granddaughter, Molly Krull; brothers, John (Bev) of Jefferson, David (Pat) of Fort Atkinson, Danny (Cindy) of Avoca, NY and Ronald (Vicki) of Fort Atkinson; sisters, Evelyn Majeski of Hartland, Pat (Forrest) Cerny of Braham, MN and Susie (Jerry) Mertens of Jackson; sister-in-law Lois Hachtel of Fort Atkinson; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Alvin G., nephew Greg Hachtel and brother-in-law Romy Majeski.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Rome with Pastor Brad Lindberg officiating.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the Dunlap Memorial Home in Fort Atkinson and from 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the church until time of service.
Burial will follow in Hoffman Cemetery in Rome.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to American Diabetes Association.
