Michael Smith Obituary

Michael Douglas Smith, 63, of Fort Atkinson passed away on Monday, December 31, 2012 after a courageous fight with liver cancer. Mike was born in Battle Creek Michigan on January 18, 1949. Mike was an Army brat and spent his early years traveling to Army ports in the US and Germany. He graduated from Leavenworth Senior High School in Kansas in 1967 and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1985 with a degree in Journalism. He worked at the Milton Courier and other businesses, most recently for Briggs & Stratton in Waukesha. He retired in 2011.

Mike served in the US Army from November 1968 to December 1973, with duty stations in Missouri, Massachusetts, California, Germany and Washington.

He is survived by daughters, Tere Williams of Myrtle Beach, SC and Rachel Smith of Janesville; grandchildren, Liane and Christopher Williams of Myrtle Beach, SC and Anthony Smith of Janesville; brothers, Thomas (Jill) of Rolling Hills Estates, CA, Brian (Tracey) of Battle Ground, WA and Stephen of Oviedo, FL; sisters, Sue (Bucky) of Louisa, VA and Martha (Gary) of Buffalo, MO and father, Douglas (Karen) of Niceville, FL. Very special friends include Sandy and Thomas Lynn, Brian and Sandy Tracy, Lisa and Pat Beech, Al DiMarco and Rick and Denise all of Fort Atkinson.

The family members thank them for their love and friendship with Mike over the past 12 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marvel Taylor and grandmother, Irene White.

A private memorial is planned by the family. Those friends wishing to send condolences should direct their requests to the Dunlap Memorial Home in Fort Atkinson.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
