Mildred Irene Trewyn Barnes, 96, of Fort Atkinson, WI, went to her Lord Sunday, August 28, 2011 at Wellington Meadows, surrounded by family.
Born on a Cold Spring farm November 25, 1914 to John and Florence (Harker) Trewyn, Mildred graduated from Whitewater High School in 1932 and married Leo F. Barnes September 2, 1933. In 1944, the growing family moved from Palmyra onto the Jefferson dairy that remains the home farm. There, she raised six children on farm products and her abundant vegetable and flower gardens. As her family matured in the 1960s and 70s, she worked at Rindfleisch Hatchery, Jefferson, Whitewater Electronics, Whitewater, and NASCO, Fort Atkinson
Mildreds hands were never idle. From farm chores, cleaning eggs, preserving fruits and vegetables, and darning socks, she continued in retirement with gardening and preserving, designing and building many crafts and projects, and making Christmas candies, treats, and other gifts for family and friends. Her passions seemed to grow with her family of six children, eighteen grandchildren, thirty four great grandchildren, and twenty three great-great grandchildren. She always seemed to know the joys and sorrows of each and every one.
Mildred and Leo enjoyed traveling all fifty states including a family visit to Hawaii in 1970 while their youngest son was on R&R from Vietnam. They drove their RV to the other 49 states, including Alaska in 1974. They wintered in Florida, Texas, and many years in Yuma, AZ, but always summered in the fields and gardens of the home farm. Widowed in 1988, Mildred lived alone and with family in Fort Atkinson before moving to Wellington Meadows in 2007.
Mildred is survived by two daughters, Jean Clark of West Virginia and Shirley (William) Jelinek of Wisconsin Dells; three sons, Rodney (Janice) of Fort Atkinson, LeRoy (Judy) of Jefferson, and Erv (Nancy) of Yuma, AZ and son-in-law, Jack Metcalf of Avalon. Preceding her in death were husband, Leo (1988); daughter, Anita Metcalf (1988); son-in-law, William Clark (1994); daughter-in-law, Rae Ann Barnes (2004); two grandchildren, three sisters, and eight brothers.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Atkinson beginning with Visitation at 9 a.m. and Funeral Celebration of Life at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. A fellowship lunch will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church after the burial.
