Norma J. Smith, a cherished soul renowned for her warmth and creativity, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2024, at the age of 90 in Jefferson, WI. Norma, who was born on January 27, 1934, in Milwaukee, WI, to Severt and Mary Christianson, lived a life marked by love, dedication, and a remarkable knack for bringing joy to those around her.
Norma's early years in Edgerton, WI laid the foundation for a life filled with passion and purpose. Her journey led her to the heart of Fort Atkinson, WI, where she would eventually leave an indelible mark on the community. Norma was the beloved wife of the late Herbert Smith and a devoted mother. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sons, John and Mark Messmer (Marie Messmer). She is survived by her loving children, Scott Messmer, Jane Messmer-Oakley (John), and Carla Gilbert (Gene Little), who will hold her memory close to their hearts. Norma's legacy continues through her adored grandchildren, Brittney, Ashley, Courtney, Sinead, Michael, Meaghan, and Joshua, who will cherish their memories with her.
Throughout her career, Norma was a dedicated employee in Environmental Services at Fort Health Care in Fort Atkinson, WI. Her commitment to her work was matched only by her involvement in various community associations, where she made lasting contributions and formed enduring friendships.
Norma was a woman of many talents and interests. She found solace and joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as knitting, sewing, and crafting. Her handmade greeting cards were not just pieces of paper but tokens of her affection, creativity, and attention to detail. Norma's love for baking could be tasted in every sweet treat she shared, and her love for reading transported her to worlds beyond her own. Above all, Norma's greatest joy was the time she spent surrounded by her family, where her heart truly resided.
As someone who cultivated beauty and comfort, Norma believed that in the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and to be grateful for every second that you get to spend with the people you love. Norma's life was a testament to this sentiment, as she left an indelible impression on the hearts of those fortunate enough to have felt her love and kindness.
Norma's departure is a solemn occasion, yet her life is a beacon of how to live with grace and how to impact the world positively. Her spirit, a blend of resilience and gentleness, will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Norma's story is not one of sorrow but a celebration of a journey well-lived and a legacy of love that will continue to inspire.
In honor of Norma's remarkable life, let us remember her not with grief but with gratitude. Gratitude for her boundless love, for her nurturing presence, and for the countless moments of happiness she created for her family and friends. Norma's life was a tapestry of beautiful memories, a collection of simple joys, and a reminder of the profound impact one person can have on so many.
As we bid farewell to Norma J. Smith, we do so knowing that she lived fully, loved deeply, and left this world a better place. Her memory will be eternally woven into the lives of those she touched, and her spirit will continue to guide us, just as the stars guide the traveler in the night sky. Norma's journey on earth has concluded, but her story will be told for generations to come, a story of a life well-lived and a woman dearly loved.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
