Thomas M. Smrekar, 75, of 725 Florence St., Fort Atkinson, passed away at Select Specialty Hospital in Madison on Sunday, May 15, 2011.
Tom was born in Fort Atkinson on January 7, 1936, the son of the late Michael and Lucille (Siewert) Smrekar. He graduated from Fort Atkinson High School in 1954. He attended Marquette University in Milwaukee.
On April 12, 1958, he was united in marriage to Barbara Smith at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson. He was preceded in death by his wife who died in 1987.
He served in the United States Army for two years, stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia.
Tom was employed for 30 years as a service person at Wisconsin Natural Gas Company in Fort Atkinson. After retiring from Wisconsin Natural Gas, he worked at ShopKo for nearly 10 years.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he served as an usher and leader of a Saturday cleaning crew. He also worked on the clean-up crew during the construction of the new church. Tom had previously been a member of the Men's Club and the Knights of Columbus Council 3396 at St. Joseph's. He served as a board member for the Fort Atkinson Food Pantry and also worked for the Second Harvest food pantry.
Tom enjoyed listening to jazz, reading, working in his yard, riding his bicycle, building and fixing things, and visiting with family, friends and neighbors. He was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers and NASCAR. Tom cherished the time he spent with his friend, Jan, since they became reacquainted after 50 plus years.
Tom is survived by a daughter, Diane (Michael) Mueller of Madison; a son, Michael (Debra) Smrekar of Janesville; a grandson, Brandon Mueller; and special friend, Jan Martin, of Stoughton.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson with Father Jay Poster officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. on Saturday at the church until the time of service. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
