Walter D. Moritz, M.D., 71, of Fort Atkinson, died on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010.
He was born on Aug. 13, 1939, in Chicago, the son of the late Ewald and Margaret (Hanlon) Moritz.
Walter was a graduate of Arlington Heights High School, Northern Illinois University, and Northwestern Medical School in 1964. He served his residency through Northwestern University.
He married Kathryn Larsen of Evansville on June 15, 1963.
Walter served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966-1968 in the Medical Corp.
He was an orthopaedic surgeon in Fort Atkinson, Stoughton and Edgerton from 1970 until his retirement in 2004.
Walter was a member of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgery and The American College of Surgeons. He was instrumental in changing medical policies both locally and statewide. He was an advocate for providing high quality healthcare to small rural communities.
Walter had a lifelong passion for the dairy industry, agriculture and construction.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn; children, Lara (Todd) Ummelmann of Kansas City, Mo., Traci (Stephen) Vitale of Edina, Minn., and Keith (Heather) Moritz of Fort Atkinson; grandchildren, Tanner Moritz Lehmann, Mary Kathryn Lehmann, Anna Rebecca Vitale and Julia Alexson Vitale; mother-in-law, Grace Faber; brother, Dan (Linda) Moritz of Lake Geneva; two sisters, Diane and Elizabeth; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Russell Frees Jr. officiating.
A private family burial will be held at a later time.
Friends may visit from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Dunlap Memorial Home.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up at the Fort Community Credit Union. Donations should be addressed to the Walter D. Moritz Memorial Fund and can be directed to any of the credit union's locations. The funds will be allocated to a local, charitable cause.
