Wayne N. Hayes, 89, Fort Atkinson, passed away on Friday, November 16, 2012. at Wellington Meadows.
He was born on July 25, 1923 in Viola, the son of the late William Elmer Hayes and Alice (Neprud) Hayes.
Wayne was a graduate of Viola High School, class of 1939 . He later graduated from Madison Business College.
He married Beverly Olson of LaFarge on January 19, 1946. She died on November 14, 2003.
Wayne served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945 in the Military Police on the Russian supply line between Iran and Iraq.
He was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church and had served on the church council and as treasurer.
Wayne was a resident of Fort Atkinson area for the past 65 years, moving from Janesville.
He operated Hayes Trucking, hauling milk, fuel oil and produce for a number of years and later worked for Larsen Canning Company with the field crew.
Wayne founded Wayne Hayes Real Estate in 1962 and ran the business for close to 40 years as the sole owner. He sold the business in 2001 to Joanne Larson and Jeff Newcomb. He remained active for the last 11 years in supporting the Fort Atkinson area as well as Jefferson County in all aspects of real estate. He enjoyed working with people by putting together many many sellers and buyers by treating them with diligence, loyalty and honesty. In May of this year he was honored by the Fort Atkinson Chamber of Commerce for being in business for 50 years. He was an active member of the Chamber and served as an Ambassador for many years.
Wayne also founded Runnin Acres Appaloosa training facility on the corner of Buena Vista Drive and Curtis Mill Road., now run by his daughter and son-in-law Karla and Roger Johnson. Runnin Acres LLC is nationally known facility for training and breeding championship horses.
Wayne was a member of the Appaloosa Horse Club, the past president of the SWAHA (South Western Appaloosa Horse Association and founding member of the ApRHA (Appaloosa Reining Horse Association).
For many years he was partner in Bound & Hayes Trailer Sales with Jack Bound.
Wayne was Realtor Emeritus member of the National Association of Realtors, Wisconsin Realtor Association and Jefferson County Board of Realtors. He had served as president as well as director of the Jefferson County Board of Realtors over the years.
Wayne was a near founder of the Fort Atkinson Kiwanis Club and served as President and managed the Annual Kiwanis Horse Show for over 30 years.
He was an avid youth enthusiast for the FFA and 4H programs including a long time supporter of the Jefferson County Fair Meat Animal Sale. Wayne was superintendent of the Jefferson County Pony and Horse Association.
He was a member of American Legion Post #166, Edwin Frohmader V.F.W. Post #1879 and a 40 year member of the Royal Order of Jacks.
He hosted an annual Ice Fishing event at the VFW in February for many years.
His knowledge and down to earth idealism will be remembered.
Survivors include his daughter, Karla (Roger) Johnson of Fort Atkinson; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Carl B. (Nancy) Olson Jr. of Pueblo, CO; Olaf (Nancy) Olson, Janesville, WI, nephews, including Craig (Helen) Fetty, Woodstock, IL and Kevin Fetty, Brighton, CO, and many many close friends.
Also preceding in death was a son, William Carl Hayes and a sister, Anna Rae Fetty.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at 11 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Bryan J. Engfer officiating.
Burial with Military Graveside Rites will be in the Lakeview Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Dunlap Memorial Home and after 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the church until the time of service.
Memorial contributions will be made to charities of the familys choosing, including Family Promise of Jefferson County.
